Wine writer + expert Elaine Chukan Brown speaks with Sarah Wuethrich, winemaker at Maggy Hawk in Anderson Valley.

Elaine and Sarah discuss Sarah’s passion and expertise working in Anderson Valley and how a hands-off wine making approach best showcases the diversity of its fruit. Together, they reveal a different side of California Pinot Noir unique to this AVA, with lower alcohol, higher acid, and distinctly Anderson Valley character.

After graduating with her Viticulture and Enology degree from University of California at Davis in 2001, Sarah made her way to Sonoma County and honed her technical skills for several years at St. Francis and Lambert Bridge. When she was invited to co-found a new wine label for Naked Wines, she jumped at the chance and spent several years making wine from lesser-known Portuguese varieties grown in small, forgotten California vineyards. In 2010, Sarah joined Copain Wines as Assistant Winemaker, working closely with co-founder and winemaker Wells Guthrie. In 2017, Sarah moved on to oversee winemaking operations at Jackson Family Wines’ Siduri Winery, where Maggy Hawk is vinified. Her passion and expertise with Anderson Valley led her to be named winemaker for the brand later that year.
